Painting plated fasteners

The tractor on which I grew up was abandoned to the weather (5-10 years) by the second owner. I rescued it, but many external fasteners are beyond repair. Not nearly ready for painting, but in the meantime, I'm replacing many fasteners and am wondering:
Will paint stick to Zinc-plated bolts/nuts/washers (mostly yellow zinc)? I also have some replacement dot head bolts which I think might be cadmium-plated so, same question. Finally there are a few 18-8 stainless items. Can anyone tell me what to do in advance to make any of these ready for paint either on the tractor or separately?

Just give them a couple hours in phosphoric acid. It will knock off enough of the shine so that the primer paint can grab ahold. You can get the phosphoric acid at a dairy supply. It is called milk stone remover. Or at restaurant supply where they call it limestone remover.

Whenever I can, I prefer to take things apart down to their component atoms, paint, then assemble with new yellow zinc fasteners. Mind you, I should keep them oiled more often...
