NOT repainting, but saving faded paint

On my wooden wagons I use food grade mineral oil to preserve the wood. It doesn't darken the wood like linseed oil. I'd like to make some of my old tractors look better without repainting
them. What should I use? Thanks, kelly

Ive heard people using linseed oil on paint or diesel fuel but I wouldnt use diesel fuel.

The dull sheen on paint is a warning sign it is beginning to fail. Without regular maintenance it will fail. On the sheetmetal you could wet sand the paint with 1500 or finer grit paper and then buff it and wax it. The rest there is a multitude of paint rejuvenation products you could use. Problem is every time you wash the tractor it would need to be treated again. In the long run a new coat of paint might be easier. You would still need to do the overkill cleaning for either method.

Two parts boiled linseed oil and three parts mineral spirits with a soft rag does a great job to brighten up old paint. Even rust looks better. Cost is less than $20. No prep except washing off the mud or dust and caked oil/grease.

I did my Oliver 88 rowcrop about six months ago. Only took about 4 hours and it darkens faded paint and leaves a nice satin finish. I plan to do it again after a year. There are many videos of the process on YouTube.

Apply by rubbing lightly. It will be a little tacky afterwards. Takes two or three days to dry to touch, so you might want to park it where it wont get real dusty while drying. Use only one part Boiled linseed to three mineral spirits to make it dry a bit faster. I don't think you can mess anything up except maybe rubbing too hard while applying. Good luck!

Rubbing compound removes dull paint and exposes the glossier paint below. Be careful around edges and curves not to cut all the way through the remaining paint. Newer paints are much thinner than was used many decades ago.
