Engine prep to paint

The engine is on the stand, (NAA 134ci). Engine and head completely renewed. Block mag fluxed, liners, pistons the works. Head new valves, guides, seals, seats, the works.

I have reassembled the engine. Rocker cover, pushrod cover, oil pan installed. I thoroughly wire wheeled the block to remove rust and applied Ospho and wiped dry.

I should have probably washed the head which was clean from the machinist before I installed it, but didn't.

I'm looking for ideas to Clean any oil residue off the head without having a mess of water or solvent get into every crevice below the head. I'm kind of confident brushing with a dilute Super Clean and wiping may be the only way. But just wondering what others may do or have done.

put some wax and grease remover, ie prep sol, pre cleano, 900 or what ever you use in your spray gun and use that to clean the head. use a blow gun
to dry it off.

glennster. Thanks for the reply. I currently have none of the suggested products. Heading to the Web.

your local body shop supplier or even napa or auto zone will have a similiar product. after you wash the block down wear disposable gloves to avoid
getting oil from your hands on the clean surface before you paint

I use 3M spray disc brake cleaner, cleans very well, blow dry and
leaves no film, can follow with paint after few minutes (10
minutes)!!!!!

Thank you all for your tips. They are well received. As to Brake cleaner, I do have a stock of cans and use it quite often. And going on one of your suggestions I did get a type of Pre Sol called Finish 1 FT200. It was pretty expensive for only a quart. If I ever get to the sheet metal it will come in handy for that too as well as cast wipe down.

So I'll add another question: On my generator, which has Alum. end plate and I had the bearings replaced, (brushes we good), has anyone painted the entire Gen. Red including the Alum end plate ? I'll tape the two oil wick balls for aesthetics since the bushing was replaced with a non-hole type that doesn't require oil.

Non-hole type bushing? I thought you were suppose to cut a hole in the bushing and line it up as you press in. Sorry to reply so late to this post! I was searching for cleaning ideas. Now Im thinking Ive installed my starter bushing incorrectly!

Two oaks, there are a few Ford advertising videos about the Jube, on you tube. They show that Ford painted them all red, and you can bet that they didn't worry about masking the oil wick balls.

Thank you Showcrop & belairbob for the replies.

I've looked at many images with Search both here and the Web. Many variations on what is painted and not. Some black some red.

Wanting to keep what I had with the FoMoCo front plate, I had the electric shop replace the bushings and polish the armature and I masked off the oil wick balls and painted it red.

Two Oaks, THERE ARE NO VARIATIONS! If you look at any of the color advertising videos of the tractors when they were factory fresh they all agree. When you look at "many images" you will see whatever various owners over 68 years have done. You can't expect to get much about original looking at current pictures.

Thanks showcrop

Could you point me to a color Advert. ? I watched a video but must have missed the color brochure.
