I shot five coats of flambeau red on my DC4, and this evening I Will lightly rub the sheet metal before I put my clearcoat on. Question is what would be a reasonable time before I apply my clearcoat? Thanks in advance .Chuck machinist. im using second dimension acrylic urethane enamelFor my paint

Tried to reply this morning but lost the internet. Do it soon if you haven't already. Try it on a small spot first and see if it lifts the base coat before you do very much.

You know the rattle can paint where it says put all the coats on within an hour or wait 7 days. A clear coat will sometimes do that to a base coat. It can make the paint wrinkle up like you put paint stripper on it.

I've worked with a lot of automotive base/clear systems, and 30 minutes between base and clear is a good rule of thumb.

My usual routine is, I shoot the base, and by the time I clean up the base coat gun, mix the clear, and check out my clear coat gun, enough time has elapsed to go ahead and shoot the clear.

The actual bottom line is, read what it says on the paint can.

Yup in the boat industry they call that gatoring as it resembles gator skin. In my experience with two stage paints I put hardener and flex agent in the base coats to eliminate gatoring and it also provides a tougher paint job. The flames on this vette were applied thin so they blended and had to be completely removed because the first application of clear gatored it horribly.
