Advice shooting Rustoleum Farm Implement paint

I am wanting to paint some of the equipment that I use alot, and brush painting doesnt get all the spots. So, I thought I would try out shooting it on. Any advice?

I use that paint a lot. I would add a hardener to it. The hardener will make the paint last longer and will gloss up better. When thinning it to spray like any enamel thin it as little as you can and use naphtha. It should actually splatter a little where you think it would dry with orange peal but it dries slow enough it will sit and flow out before it sets up. When you mix it spray a piece of scrap metal and let it sit for a half hour or so and see what it looks like before spraying something important. If you have it thinned enough it should flow out by then.

What kind or brand of gardener would you use?

Treat the rust with a chemical. Don't paint over rust.
I use phosphoric acid. Can buy a strong food grade more concentrated acid off Amazon.
Has a terrible smell.

What's a brush?
I only spray.
I sprayed dump trailer with high gloss rustoleum

Sprayed plow with left over IH paint.

How did you thin it? Did you use hardener?

I buy hardener at Tractor Supply where I get the paint. The Tractor Supply in my town sells the Majic brand hardener. There are those that have a low opinion of Majic paint but I've never used their paint so I can't say. I did paint a tractor with the Rustoleum paint and used the Majic hardener in 2009 and it's holding up well. The color was orange normally very prone to fade but you can barely see it's faded when compared with new paint.

Thinned red with mineral spirits. Bought hardner at RK where I got the paint.
Black rustoleum just mineral spirits.
Clean gun with mineral spirits too.
I always leave mineral spirits in spray gun.

If you were mixing a sprayer cup full of the paint I would probably only put in about a tablespoon of naphtha. The ratio would vary from sprayer to sprayer so you might need more or less in your sprayer. You might try spraying it without thinning it first and see. Too much thinner will screw up the paint. The less you can use the better the paint job will be. You just need barely enough to get it through the gun. It should look awful spraying it, splatters and gives you the impression it will dry with a texture but it dries so slow the texture should flow together and level out.fTry it on some scrap metal and let it sit for a little while and see what it does.

What happens when you thin it too much it dries with a gritty texture to it and ends up with a semi-gloss sheen instead of a smooth gloss finish if it was thinned right.

I mostly follow can directions on thinning, but a little over the recommendation. Probably wind up at 10-20% dependingon temperature. 10 on first coat for coverage and higher on later ones for flow and gloss.

Always use hardener and thin with naptha or specific reducer. Aids with dry time and gloss.
