I am getting ready to paint my 2040 and considering several paint brands. Like John Deere, PPG commercial performance, Omni,,Majic. What would be best over existing paint. I will use a scuff pad on it , and degrese it first. Thanks Doug

The brand of paint has little significance and there is no such thing as "John Deere" paint. Only JD "labeled" paint. You want to decide what type fits your objective. Half of the threads on this paint forum are about the question that you are asking. If your intent is for the pain to last more than 2-3 years you need to prime it before top coating.

As the old saying goes, "You get what you pay for". Cheap paint will disappoint & fade. Preparation is paramount. Sand, clean with prep-sol or equivalent and sand again and clean again. Absolutely no silicone
or oil can be left on the surface. The best thing since sliced bread is etching primer. When you get done with the sanding and cleaning, shoot a coat or two of etching primer. This works on bare metal where
you broke through the old paint to make the topcoat adhere. Doesn't matter which manufacturer but it must have the etching acid in it. John Deere paint, whoever makes it, has worked well. It's an old-fashioned
alkyd enamel which has a lot of beef and the proper color and flows out nice for a factory-looking result. Watch your temperature when topcoating. The difference in temperature from say, 55 degrees to 70
degrees is enormous. Pick a day closer to 70 with dryer air. That means the shop must be 70, the paint must be 70 and the item you're painting must be 70. Shoot a light but thorough 1st coat and then a full
2nd coat watching for a nice shine but not overdoing the application and considering the temperature. That being said, keep the dust down, - no wind tunnel around the job. With this system I've never had a
speck of paint chip off.

hanks for the help . Are you saying to only prime the bare metal areas or the whole tractor . I have a whole shop fan in the ceiling that sucks all the air out of the shop every three min. and planned to put ac filters over the open windows along with watering down the floor. Also is there a hardner I can put in the JD brand paint. Thanks Doug

Brand isn't that important. What is important is what type of paint the existing paint is. You can easily topcoat with a paint that is incompatible and can have adhesion or lifting issues. You might contact John Deere and find out what kind of paint was used.

John Deere . No they dont make but they spec how it is
made it lasts longer and keeps it color better . This paint is 18
years old and still polishes up nice and it gets washed once a
year if its lucky and never is in a shed . The first was before
polish the second after

John Deere sells a hardener, but I get mine from a parts store in town. I also use reducer from town, not the John Deere brand.

Just make sure not to buy cheap paint, the important thing is the preparation. the usual sanding and cleaning with prep-sol
