Has anyone exparamented with adding polyurethane to alkyd oil enamels? Off the shelf
enamels don't have real good durability anmd seem to take forever to dry. One dealer offers urethane fortified enamel that supposedly are more durable than straight enamel.I like the DIY approach to problems like this. If anyone has done exparaments, please share the results. Thanks.

I am not a fan of mixing different paint types, I have upgraded to urethane on most paints. The hardener for urethane is different than the one for enamel, so not sure how that would work. The work goes into prep, so I am not going to experiment.

Depends on the application and color. Except for professional suppliers the polyurethane available in the stores is an interior finish. You can add poly to alkyd paint but you make the paint for interior use by doing so. For exterior use you would be better off adding a marine grade spar varnish. If you can find an exterior polyurethane it would work. Now the color, the paint is a mixture of a clear resin and a pigment. A light color, especially white if you mix a oil based clear to it, the balance between the pigment and the clear will be changed where there is more clear than pigment. Oil based clears will yellow with age and by mixing an oil based clear to the alkyd paint the paint color is more likely to yellow with age. It could also make a light green color have a blue tint to it with age. The safest way to add a clear to paint would be to use a urethane clear over the top of the paint.
