sheet metal prep

Hi all

Project is a 555 Massey. Hopefully will get at the sheet metal preparation soon. I've got my eye on a 5" Random Orbit sander. When I order it I might as well get the sanding discs that I will need for the job at the same time.
So I don't know a darned thing about body work and am not set up for it anyway. I just want to try and get the rust off of it. Most of the sheet metal is covered with what appears to be just surface rust. Can't see anywhere where there is rust perforation. Handling the pieces as they came off the tractor they seemed solid.
Could you tell me what I need? Tips? Do's and Don'ts. or could you point me in the direction of some online resources please?

thanks ever so much

John

Your best tool will be a cup type twisted wire wheel to go in your grinder, but get a straight one as well. There is no way to get rust out of the pits mechanically. You need to use one of the phosphoric acid rust converters.

Showcrop pretty well covered the do's. You could use an orbital sander to do the job, it would just take a little longer than a wire wheel. What ever you use be careful not to get the metal too hot. On
sheetmetal you can warp the metal getting it hot. If the metal is pitted, after it's treated with phosphoric acid I would prime it first with epoxy primer. From there you could bondo it and level the surface
and then when you get ready to paint use epoxy primer again. Epoxy primer is good to stop the rust but it has a recoat window. This means you have to topcoat it withing something like eight hours or you have
to sand it and use another coat of epoxy. What you coat it with could be a filler primer since epoxy primer doesn't sand like you think primer should. From there you could put what ever paint you wish. Since
the tractor is red you might consider using an automotive paint. The color red is prone to fade and automotive paint is more colorfast.
