Hardener Question

A while back I purchased a gallon of Valspar farm equipment paint for a project. Since that time the local Farm and Fleet has switched from Valspar to Krylon, so I'm unable to get the Valspar hardener to use with the paint. Can I use the Krylon enamel hardener with the Valspar paint?

I know that it's best to stick with the same brand of paint and hardener, but I can't find Valspar hardener locally or on Amazon right now. Thanks.

Both hardeners are similar enough to be interchangeable so that will work. They are formulated for Alkyd enamels. If it were me though I would get rid of the Valspar paint. It's a terrible product especially if it's a color like red prone to fade.

Thanks. It's just white that I'm using so hopefully the Valspar "quality" won't show too much. Is Krylon any better for quality or are the farm store paints all crappy? I think Theisens, another local farm store, sells Van Sickle paint.

The first tractor I painted was a Kubota tractor and I used Valspar paint. Within two months the orange tractor was about peach color. The color orange is a mixture of red and yellow and the red faded out very quickly. You could almost see the tractor fade daily. After a couple years the color was nearly white. I repainted the tractor again in 2009 and used Rustoleum Tractor and Implement paint from tractor supply. Today the paint looks good as new with only a very slight fading.

I don't have enough experience with Krylon paint to advise you on the quality. I use some rattle can Krylon from time to time but not on something important.

Van Sickle Paint has a good reputation however I haven't used that one either. If the project is important I use automotive paint.

I'm not impressed with VanSickle. Painted a Farmall several years ago. Was starting to turn by the end of summer.

On the other hand, I'm pretty impressed with the IronGuard paints you get at a Case/IHC dealer. The red stays red for a long time, and only about $65/gallon. Get their reducer though.

Here is the H that the local FFA restored and painted with cheap paint for my friend 15 years ago. You can see that the paint is still good where it has been protected by the decals.
