I?m headed out tomorrow to find a good mask to paint at 430
Case. I?ll be painting urethane -reducer-and Hardner 841
Mixture. Any face mask recommendations?I hope this post
finds everyone well. CM

If your using a hardener u need a Suppied Air System, mask are NOT sufficient (so I was told)!!!!!!! I have painted close to maybe 20 tractors and I would not be without my SAS system even without the hardener!! It?s probably not cost effective if you are just going to paint 1-2 tractors tho!!!!!

Don't even spray urethane outdoors without an air supplied respirator. I sprayed one tractor outdoors with a filter type respirator and held my breath when I was down wind of the paint. Afterwards I coughed for six months. The isocyanate hardener will really hurt you. The air supplied respirator is expensive and I thought I could get away with just spraying two gallons without it but I was wrong.

With what is going on in the country right now I don't know if you can even buy the equipment right now. You would be better off using an alkyd enamel with the milder hardener than to hurt yourself spraying urethane. I painted two tractors that year and the one I painted with Nason urethane isn't holding up as well as the one I did with enamel. It was about 10 years ago.

It came down to either buy a SAS or quit painting for me!!!!! Didn?t think I?d like it but it works great!!! In the summer time when it?s hot (i paint outside) I was afraid it would be uncomfortable but It?s actually cooler when using it, I?ve even come to using it when it gets really dusty or dirty when sanding or using wire brush!!!! You can actually set up a very cheap cooling system so it would blow cool air!!! Best money I ever spent, definitely cheaper then having to buy oxygen for your lungs rest of ur life for sure!!!

I have a Breathe cool. It works fine, but the name is a little misleading, does not cool the air. I wrap unused air line coils in ice water bucket in summer.

Glad you are asking questions on SAS, I spent an evening in ER, now I can't get near hardener without wheezing. I have to let paint out overnight before getting near it.

I have a Hobby air unit with 40 ft. of hose in the paint booth probably not a professional unit but has worked well for me as I do not do that much painting. For small outside jobs and very small in shop jobs I have used 3M and Gerson masks. My Nason and Axalta paint supplier sell them. They say they are ok to use with prducts they sell if used corectly.

Ed,

The problem is in the seal around the mask, the extra air pressure in the SAS keeps it from getting in.

I also have the Breathe Cool w/Full face mask and extra length of hose. Ordered online, Amazon I think. Not that expensive considering the alternative. It made painting a lot more relaxing. I Thought the extra hose to drag around would be a hassle but you get use to it. I considered Hobby Air also but I think I could run a longer hose with Breathe Cool, not sure on that, but something to consider.
You will be looking for more things to paint once you are set up.

Stephen, This is the first that I have heard of a "mild" hardener for alkyd enamel? You don't need supplied air with it?
