Thinking about applying clear coat over single stage paint!!! How long after applying the single stage paint would I clear coat it and do I need to scuff the single stage before application of the clear coat??? Are there any advantages of clear coating??? I use a hardener and get a very good shine so would the clear coat make it more durable, lessen fading any????
 
My paint rep always told me you had a 24 hour window to spray clearcoat on single stage, but that has been some time back. I have seen several clear coat jobs over single stage that peeled after a year or so. I have never tried it. I use single stage with hardner or 2 stage. There are paints available now that you can mix the clear in with the paint. I just did a truck hood. It came out nice. Deltafleet by PPG is one. Some of the more professional painters than me can tell you more.
 
I painted one of my trucks 5 years ago with single-stage acrylic enamel, with clear-coat urethane over it. Worked out great and so far all is fine. Paint company stated that with that first coat of enamel - I either had to spray the clear-coat at the 24 hour mark, or wait 7 days. I waited 7 days for a full cure. Then lightly sanded it and sprayed the urethane clear-coat. I was not seeking "show quality" but it exceeded my expectations.
 
I don't care for clear coat on a single stage paint. The single stage paint is easier to touch up and maintain without the clear coat. If you use good paint fading shouldn't be an issue.

Depends on what paint you are talking about.
