Any tricks or suggestions to toughen up the paint around gear shifter where it rubs on John Deere 2 cylinder. I am using a hardener in the paint. Thanks

No amount of 'hardener',etc will make the paint that wear'resitant'. It just aint gonna happen. Live with the scuff. It's just the way things are.just like the paint on the throttle notches of my M Farmall. The first time you work the throttle, the paint is gone....

The finish is going to wear but if you put a urethane clear coat on it on a regular basis before it rubs through it would take care of it. With a clear coat you can tell from looking at it if you have gone through to the color coat. This would give you an idea of how often to recoat.

You might test some rattle can clears on a scrap piece of metal. Paint the metal with the base coat like you did the tractor and let it dry a month. Then try the rattle clear. Often rattle can paint contains acetone which would lift an enamel like you put paint stripper on it. Better to practice on scrap first.

I have seen some that have no paint on the wear area, which indicates to me that it was masked or perhaps coated with grease. I thought that it looked very good.
