Hand scuffing with red scotchbrite?

A kitchen scotch brite pad is different than one for paint. The kitchen one is for cleaning where the ones made for paint is an abrasive. A place that sells automotive paint would be the place to find the ones made for paint. They come in different grits like sandpaper does.

I ordered these from Zoro Tools. They are supposed to be aluminum oxide. I think they measure 6" X 9". I ordered 10, and the way they wear they will probably last me a lifetime. The wife inspected them and declared them unsafe for her coated kettles. I didn't argue.

Thanks again to all for the good advice!

The automotive pads are color coded for grit. Here is a chart which lists the pads grit equivalent.

Kitchen scotchbrites have been discussed on custom painting sites .Some ridiculed the idea ,said they are for pots . Others said they were cheaper and worked fine. Notice they are not on the chart below that lists the abrasiveness.

You can use it either way and yes, the red grocery store scotchbrite is the same as the product for paint prep. It's really great stuff. I keep it in my parts washer to clean nasty parts, carburetors, prep parts for paint and general cleaning. It will take the shine off something. It's great stuff.
