Ford Red paint

It was recommended I buy Rustoleum Sunrise Red for my NAA. Rustoleum representative says they don't make it in Gallons. TSC has Rustoleum Ford Red in Gallons. I only need 1 Gal. and spray cans. Has anyone used either color ? And can you tell the difference. I have painted two parts with IH Red. Your thoughts on how all three compare colorwise

The paint would probably match but you may not be able to mix rattle can paint with the gallon paint. The stuff in rattle can may be the same color and match exactly but is very likely a different kind of paint. It may be a quick dry enamel or lacquer which the solvents would lift the enamel paint. If you have an application where you are doing both in the same piece you may need to do the rattle can paint first and let it dry and then use the enamel paint from the gallon. You certainly shouldn't use the rattle can paint for touch up.

TwoOaks, be aware that there are two Ford reds. The older, which yours should be is commonly referred to as vermillion, is a significantly darker than the orange red that succeeded it in 1958. Be aware also that bright colors like red are subject to degrading and fading from exposure to sun. It sounds like you are not doing a lot of prep work so Rustoleum may be a good choice.

I agree, there are two reds, make sure and get the right one, I have had good luck with buying from CNH.

NAPA can put paint in a spray can, they would probably put yours in if you have a good relationship with them.

Thank you showcrop. Kevin LaRue over at myfordtractors says CNH red is too orange for the N's.Hence the question about Ford Red and Sunrise Red. And yes, I'm not doing a sand blast prep, but all attached parts are off and cleaned. Every bit of rust is wire wheeled and scratched off and Ospho applied and wiped down. The body will be next after I reinstall the axles and can roll it out to pressure washed, solvent, brush, repeat several times. It won't be perfectly clean, but will be very clean.

As I said earlier TwoOaks, there are two Ford reds regardless of whose they are. The Ns, the NAA, and the X00s all share the vermillion red regardless of where you buy it. The XX1s have the later orange red as I said earlier, regardless of where you buy it. It would be a shame to put Rustoleum over all of that prep work.

Thanks Showcrop. I've been following posts by Rustbucket Dan and his methods and paints. He used the Rustoleum Sunrise Red and I guess he could buy it in gallons then, but not now. He posted back in 2007.

Why not get the paint from CNH dealer, they can match year to color, and paint is as good as any?

I just got done doing the mower deck on my Toro Z Master. I ended up buying the Sunrise red Rustoleum. Walmart has it for about $3 dollars for 8 oz container so I didn't have much to lose. The 18 year old deck needed a lot of prep but not too bad. I bought 3 cans but only used 2 of them. Used my small touch up professional paint gun. Not an expensive one. I put in both pints in a container and added some naptha to thin it and about an ounce or two of Valspar hardner. Temp outside was about 60 and humidity was low. Wind was calm. It took about an hour or two to be dry to touch and was completely dry overnight so I could finish putting stuff back on. I was happy the paint matched as well as it did.

Davpal, sounds like you don't have much money to loose, "$3 dollars for 8 oz container so I didn't have much to lose. The 18 year old deck needed a lot of prep", but a whole lot of time lost you need to remove it.

I guess I don't get your point. It cost me $6 dollars worth of paint and a few hours of time on sunday to prep and spray it. Now it looks like new again. Am I missing something?

The point is initially you said "a lot of prep" which if the paint doesn't hold up, as we have seen many stories of here, you have lost the time spent on "a lot of prep"

Thanks for the reply Davpal

That looks very nice. I was torn between Rustoleum and YT store Tisco. There were no stores within 30 miles that carried Rustoleum so I went with 2 Qts. and a pack of 6 cans of Vermillion from YT. I've been removing all grease with brake cleaner and wire wheeling off rust from nuts and bolts. Soon I'll temp put on the front wheels and use my FEL to hoist it outside for a wash down with super clean. What Primer color if any did you use ? After I get the body done I'll pull the engine and rebuild it. Lastly plan to sandblast the sheet metal. Also been using Ospho on all cleaned steel fasteners.

I sanded it with 320 grit and wiped it down with super clean and then some naptha. I only sprayed the rusty or bare spots with some rustoleum gray primer in a can. Worked great. Just had a few spots to touch up. Most of the deck was still original paint. I did the underside with some black enamel with hardner to keep the rust away for longer. Mowed with it yesterday and it worked great with new idler wheels, belt and sharpened blades. Hope it's good now for a few more years.
