Can I get a somewhat smooth finish on an implement buy brushing the paint on ? I want to paint my farmhand loader to match the tractor and I have a gallon and a quart of John Deere green paint im not looking for a show quality Finish .

I think I?ll try it and see anyway ? I have an old paint gun I guess I could buy another cheap one and spray it .

To get a smooth finish brushing the paint use as soft of a paint brush as you can find. Then apply the paint as thin as you can with as few strokes as possible. The more you brush paint the more the brush marks will show. It introduces air in the paint and causes it to set up faster. If you apply it and get off of it the paint the texture made by the brush will flow together before it sets up. It's probably not an issue now but in warm weather it helps to use Flood Penetrol in oil based paint. It slows the drying time down so the paint is more likely to flow together.

I'll second what Stephen Newell said about Flood Penetrol. I have painted with a brush several running gears in my hobby of building parade wagons and almost always use Flood Penetrol. It was recommended to me by a local body shop. It does a good job of eliminating brush strokes.

I was wondering about those foam brushes for painting ? Also thinking I might just fire up the paint gun. But if it would brush in ok I?m thinking I may just try it

Unless there is something wrong with the sprayer you will always get a better finish spraying it. I don't brush any paint anymore if I can help it. Sometimes overspray prevents spraying paint though. I don't like the foam brushes. They tend to rub off as much paint as you are applying plus bits of the foam tend to come off and get into the paint. I used to use a foam brush for wood stain but have gotten to where I spray the stain too. I don't buy them anymore.

I have painted a lot of equipment and tractors with a small paint roller(short nap) and brushes. You want your paint thicker than spray paint, the paint will flow and fill in the brush marks. I called them 10ft paint jobs, looked pretty good from 10ft away. If you want a show quality job, spend more money and do it right.

(quoted from post at 06:36:33 04/14/18) It would really be a lot quicker to spray it.

Get a 50 dollar spray gun.

I agree. It takes so long to get into all the little in behind places, and spray guns are so cheap now, you don't need to pay over $30.00
