What will give the best results to keep the cast iron as glossy as the sheet metal years down the road?
In the past the cast gets a duller finish than the sheet metal for me.

Cast absorbs more of the paint. It would help if you would add an extra coat of paint. Also the sheet metal cleans easier than cast so the cast tends to hold more dirt. It would help if the cast was cleaned more often.

Give plenty of attention to rust removal on the cast iron. Areas like the top of the axle that may have had mud on them for years can have rust deeper than it looks.

If you are using enamel paint add hardener.

Cast iron will soak up a LOT of paint. I have found the easiest way to get ENOUGH paint on cast iron is with a brush.
