prepping IH disk

I just bought a nice 10" IH 37 disk. It has been outside so it has lichen on it, as you can see by the pictures. My plan is to clean and prep this disk for primer and paint. What should I use to clean off this lichen so it is ready to put a primer coat on? Any other tips, tricks, suggestions to share as I get ready to repaint this disk? Thank you in advance.

As bad as that is I would recommend having it professionally sandblasted. Then as quick as you can get to it prime it with epoxy primer.

Lichen is very hard when dry. The key to removal is to get it wet, and keep it wet for a number of hours so that it will soften. Then apply pretty much any general purpose cleaner. Neither the imaginative name nor the color of the cleaner don't matter, but it must have surfactant and alkalinity to do the job. If possible go at it after 2-3 days of a rainy spell, or, wet it down and spray with the cleaner in the evening. The coolness overnight will let it stay moist so the cleaner can work. Then go at it early in the morning with a pressure washer before it can dry.

To do a complete and near proper restoration one would need to completely dis-assemble, clean, prep, paint, and re-assemble. With the different colors of the various parts I don't see how one can repaint with taking everything apart. Yes, it will be lots of work but will make the final product worth the extra time and effort.

A hot water pressure washer and a muriatic acid bath will kill and remove the lichens so they will not show through the paint. Painting a disk is a hard job without taking it apart.

WESnIL...what are all of the different colors for this disk? I thought red and black should cover it. Would you recommend sandblasting the parts? Have you restored a #37 disk?
