Painting A JD 5020

I am painting my 5020 in my shop. I know a little about paint and primers but my question is…can I spray epoxy primer on the frame and engine and spray PPG base coat and clear it without sanding the primer if I paint it within the hour? To be honest, Im trying to get out of sanding the little spots that I can't get to in the small places but I don't want it to peal later. Will epoxy stick to non sanded engine and frame? Is there an adhesion promoter that can be applied before painting, that will work?

You are really not getting the benefit of epoxy primer to apply it over paint. It's better put over bare metal. You might consider a different primer. Then like David said a primer will need to make a mechanical bond to the old paint. You will have to find some means of roughening up the old paint for anything to adhere. If you don't want to sand you might lightly sandblast the old paint. Enough to roughen the paint but not to remove it.

You are correct about the epoxy primer. There is a recoat window which is normally about 8 hours you have to topcoat to be able to do it without sanding the primer.

Painting a tractor is a lot different than painting a car. A tractor is usually covered with oil and grease which takes an enormous effort to clean off. If the slightest trace of oil is left on the old paint the new paint will peal off whether you roughen the surface or not. Some of us use an oven cleaner and a power washer to insure all the grease is gone.

Stephen,

Thanks for comment, "no paint will stick to unsanded or unclean paint".

I would wash with good hot detergent power wash, oven cleaner, another hot detergent power wash, sand, then power wash again, then paint.

Would the oven cleaner rough up the paint enough for good bonding? The oven cleaner I have used is pretty rough on paint.
