Removing Paint from Golden Jubilee

This is after the second coat of oven cleaner. Was I wrong in expecting more? Should I try another coat? Different paint stripper?

Thanks for the help.

No pic but I do have a recommendation. Go get some more oven cleaner and plastic cling wrap, like saran wrap but doesn't have to be that brand. spray the cleaner and immediately cover it. Press the plastic down as tightly as you can around all protrusions. Wait ! give it time to work. The plastic will allow it to stay wet and work longer/better.

I build parade wagons as a hobby and have stripped several running gears over the years. I've never considered oven cleaner a paint stripper and have used it only to remove grease which it does quite well. I strip running gears inside my garage and use Citrusstripper, a pink gel that can be used indoors - no vicious fumes. It normally takes 2 coats to remove all the old paint. You can use a more aggressive stripper but you will need to do it outdoors with protection from the fumes. If you strip outdoors, you should do it in the shade as the sun and wind will dry out the stripper before it can do its job.

If you are trying to remove the paint oven cleaner is too mild. It contains a very small amount of sodium hydroxide which is the stripper. You would be better off using a paint and varnish remover made for metal. Klean Strip Aircraft Paint Remover would be better. Keep in mind that stripping paint isn't a winter sport. No remover works well below 70 degrees. With that remover brush a abundant amount of stripper on keeping the stripper wet for about 15 minutes and then wash it off with a power washer. Work small areas around two square foot at a time. It's difficult to keep larger areas wet when you are soaking the finish loose.

Oven cleaner is for removing sign paint enamel from truck lettering --not to strip the entire surface . You need aircraft stripper . Why it is called that I don't know but that is what strips paint.

The name is a marketing thing. Paint for aircraft is often a polyester urethane which is a lot tougher to remove. I've never tried to strip an airplane before. If it would work on a plane I would be impressed.

Dr. Sportster it sounds like you need to give some oven cleaner a try, LOL>

Oven cleaner is a very good degreaser. I coat the tractor with it, and use a hot water pressure washer to get it clean. I then put aircraft paint remover on it, and again use the hot water pressure washer. This process works very well. Rent a good (high psi) hot water pressure washer if you don?t have one. The hot water will remove a lot of paint by itself.

Have you have ever seen aluminum wheels that are pealing the clear coat? Aircraft stripper will eat that old clear coat and leave you with a shiny wheel that will sell for more than a new one. It does the same to paint. Go to HF and buy a dozen cheap chip brushes, for the application and throw them away when you are done.

I use oven cleaner to remove Lettering enamel from truck doors and it does not damage the underlying factory paint at all. Maybe it works on old tractor paint but that is not my preferred product.
