very noob question: where to buy paint?

Hi,

after the advice I received below I think ill go with one of the acrylic enamels as that seems a balance between quality of paint and safety/ease of application.

I looked at a variety of auto parts store web sites and I am worse confused than ever; I looked at manufacturer web sites and am even worse confused.

This is worse than buying a mattress!

I know this seems like the most elementary question ever: where do you buy paint? Do they mix to a paint code in the store or do you order the paint mixed from the factory?

thank you!

Bill

best to google auto body supplies and see who is your closest supplier. napa does sell martin senyour paint lines, which are a sherwin williams product.

There is autobody shops all over and they need paint daily. There has to be a place in your area that sells automotive paint. You might try Napa. My local Napa sells Dupont automotive paints.

When you spray acrylic enamel on vertical surfaces be sure to put it on in light coats. It's prone to run.

They will mix the paint to the paint code or if you have a sample they can computer match it. If you can't find the code and have some rattle can paint you could just make a sample.

Actually more like buying carpeting. Only you can set down a list of your priorities based on your painting/prep aptitude , available equipment, available spray booth/spray area , quality and durability of finished job , intended use of tractor and lastly, price of paint & materials. Be very honest with yourself with your answers as most are not and end up very disappointed in the end. Remember one rule..." The Definition of Quality is Conformance to Requirements ". This is true in everything in life.

I too like the NAPA crossfire paint! I do use the hardener too but I also have a Supplied Air System, do not use the hardener without it!!!!

I have no high quality equipment, just an old Binks gun and a Harbor Freight gun and little skill in using a gun although I was the painter when I worked at a dealer, so I just use the dealer paint.Unless you have mastered a reasonable skill and have the correct booth and have done a high quality preparation The dealer paint is all you need.

"Unless you have mastered a reasonable skill and have correct booth and have done high quality preparation, the dealer paint is all you need" -- that may be true but how is the job going to look ? Or why bother ?
