painting engine after rebuild

Hi, All,

my block and head are coming back from the shop soon after a bath in the hot tank and some machining. I will reassemble over the next few weeks.

What do you recommend for protecting the engine castings? Its about 3 degrees here in Nashville tonight :) If I do repaint the rest of the tractor it wont be for several months, but I dont want the castings rusting in the mean time.

thanks in advance

Bill

Epoxy primer. The specs on the primer will probably tell you to top coat within 72 hours. The other question is heat. If the motor gets hot enough to bubble either the primer or the top coat, you will have bigger worries.

Even if you can't feel it there will be a certain about of oil on the block so thoroughly clean the block with a solvent such as lacquer thinner. Then you might prime the sheet metal pan first but the engine castings itself you could just go direct to metal with a high temperature paint.

Hi,

sorry, I'm thick :)

so paint the engine all the way to finish color NOW, and then if I choose, the rest fo the beast later. Gotcha.

If you go out of the re-coat window you can still get good adhesion of the topcoat by stuffing it thoroughly with a purple Scotchbrite pad.

This! We did that even if it was only for a few days. IF it was going to be a few weeks, we would spray the cylinder walls with WD40, or the like, to keep them from possibly rusting, as well as block decks and head surfaces.

(quoted from post at 18:50:05 01/17/18) You might wrap the parts in polyethylene plastic and tape it shut airtight.

I wouldn't want to enclose anything in poly without some silica gel or similar desiccant enclosed.

Yea, sheet metal is smooth and paint has a difficult time getting grip on it so you have to use primer. Since cast is rough paint can bond to it easier so I thought it would be the easiest solution to just go ahead and paint it. Then later on if it got dings in it putting it together and installing it you could just touch it up. At least the rust problem you wouldn't have to deal with.
