Finish coat on H

Would like some simple advice; my paint guy messed up the last coat of paint on my "H" so I'm going to do it- he took off on me! I have a new gun; im using Tractor Supply IH paint- seems to be good. I have it sanded and ready; please advise me how to mix thinner in my paint...I think this paint comes with hardener in it already. I have it sanded with 600 and ready ...just tell me simply how to mix for my gun- and no I'm no professional but I want to get er done! Thanks!

I would suggest finding a painter who knows what they are doing to do the finish coat. A inexperienced painter can make a mess of a paint job (as you found out). Doing a finish coat is not something I would recommend you not to do with no experience.

I was afraid someone would tell me that! I want to learn- how do I learn if I don't do it? Its a "tractor"!

Apparently that gut was "learning" on your tractor too. You learn on an old car hood or similar item.....unless you want to do the tractor two or three times. Auto painters didn't start out learning on cars. Hardner can't come in the paint...it will harden up in a few hrs once mixed. Practice with cheap paint and NO hardner to get the basics down.

This is not an H,it's not even red.I am not a professional painter,I do not have a paint booth, but this is not the first tractor I ever painted and I assure you the paint didn't come from Tractor Supply.Primer, base coat, hardeners, reducers and clear coat roughly $650.00. If you want a nice job it costs money. It takes a lot of time, patience and practice.

I'll start off by saying that I'm NOT a painter, but once in a while I'll spray some paint on something.

I usually use John Deere paint, and the directions on the can tell the recommended paint to thinner ratio, and also the re-coat times. I go exactly by their directions, and I'm not aware of ever having any problems. Like I said - I'm not a painter, so maybe I'm having problems and just don't know it.

Many years ago I ignored the recoat time recommendations on a nice metal cabinet that I was painting for my wife. It looked real slick until I came back a few hours later. I had a severely wrinkled finish and an irritated wife. I got some paint remover and started over.

TS paint will look good for about two years, and then the pigment just evaporates and the tin turns to rust.BTDT IH brand has held up for ten years for me.

The product you are using will have directions for mixing for that specific product. It will either say on the can or the manufacturer website. You can't/shouldn't guess at it, get the proper info before starting.

(quoted from post at 17:59:24 07/22/17) thanks...Ill do this! Can anyone tell me how much thinner to add to my paint- simple question. Thanks

I always say don't put expensive paint over a five hour prep job, and don't put cheap paint over a fifty hour prep job. I do some of each so I buy some cheap expensive paint and some expensive cheap paint. For this one I used Nason 2K urethane paint from my local paint jobber. They matched it digitally. The Nason is a low-end automotive. Red paint will fade out bad if not good quality. Quit trying to be over optimistic. How for crying' out loud can you say that paint still in the can "seems good"?

A large sheet of cardboard is also good for practice. Even a 5 gallon bucket will work.
