New way to wet sand

I am wet scotchbriting the frame on the LI, along with the inside of the sheet metal, then will wet sand the outside of sheetmetal. I had a bucket of dawn mixed in with water from washing tractors for the parade. I used that to rinse off the pads, it really worked good to clean the pad, and seemed to clean any remaining grease off well.

I was doing this when the frame fell off the stands yesterday.

If you are going to sand then I would use sandpaper. The scotchbrite pad isn't going to level the paint. In addition a scotchbrite is more for polishing, the finish needs to be sanded for adhesion purposes. Also there is so many chemicals in soap be sure you do an overkill rinsing it off before applying paint. The soap can prevent adhesion of the paint.

A little dawn in the water makes water wetter which carries dirt with it easier!

Years ago I had to flush a large drain that had a mud sludge. I bought a drum of what was called water wetter from a City that helped the water to carry sludge out of the long drain.

The little bit of Dawn dishwashing soap in water for wet sanding is nothing new. Custom car painters have been using if for many years. The soap acts like a lubricant to make sanding easier, it helps to keep the sand paper from getting clogged with paint which can cause deep scratches, and it also helps removes oily residue from the surfaces you are sanding on. After sanding right before painting you should wipe everything down with a wax, and grease remover (automotive paint stores have it in stock from quarts, to gallons). After the wax, and grease wipe down going over everything with a tack rag will get rid of any remaining dust right before you start painting.

when the frame fell off the stands david!! I hope you where wearing your steel toed boots :wink: and of course you where using osha approved stands. I'm sure we have all been there done that! I know I have, I look at these incidents as a suttle reminder to wake up and pay attention! my dad used to growl at us boys to (use your head for more than a hat rack!) when we'd goof up. the funny part is I'm still goofing up at times 50 years later :wink:
