When waxing or light compounding black cars. Polish in circles or straight lines back and forth. I know nothing about this, I've heard circles produce swirls in the paint. This will be all hand work. Don't have a orbital buffer or the skills not to burn the edges, thanks, John

Circular motions . Black tends to show swirls marks no matter what. There is even a wax called "Black Car Wax". The hobby type buffers or non-professional don't really spin fast enough to do much damage but then they don't go fast enough to let the buffing compounds work.

It would be worth getting a 7" auto polisher and a lambswool bonnet to do the job. I have one of these that works well for my needs. https://www.harborfreight.com/7-in-10-amp-variable-speed-polisher-60626.html

If the paint is in pretty good shape you use less and less pressure on it to where it's not producing swirl marks.

One of my instructors in auto body at our local community college once said if you want to find out how good of a body man you are, paint something black.

Black shows everything!

If you want to lessen the chance of getting swirl marks, purchase a dual action polisher. I have 3 black vehicles and they show everything, keeping them clean and swirl free is a challenge that will almost make you crazy. When washing make sure to always rinse the car as much as possible to remove any dirt that may be on the surface before you start dragging a sponge or mitt across the paint, the tiny scratches that are invisible on other colors show up prominently on black. There are tons of videos on the net, especially Youtube, devoted to detailing black cars.

I was gifted one of those cheap B&D polishers from Lowes or Home Depot. I have to order the pads online, but that little thing does a good job. I have a black truck and a black Mustang, and it worked very well on each of them. I used Mequires Cleaner Wax, then the carnuba wax and both look great.
