Filler over primer

I had sheet metal sand blasted and primed. Can I go over primer with filler or should that be sanded back to bare metal before I use filler? This is tractor hood, nose cone and grill.

The blast profile in the metal provides bite enough for filler plus you will gain some corrosian resistance. Most primers are not thick enough to fill in the rough profile left by blasting. Did you ever mistakenly drop a little filler on a chrome bumper? Just try to get it off! It doesn't need bare metal for adhesion...it needs a grip.

You can put a fiberglass filler over primer. If you used an epoxy primer it's the best way to do it. The epoxy primer seals out moisture to the metal where otherwise if there was a scratch there water would penetrate through the filler and rust out the metal.

Doesn't matter, as I live in SW KS, I have left bare metal for a year with no rust, inside.

No problem putting filler direct over metal provided that it is DIRECT, nothing like rust particles in between. Also the filler needs to specify that it is DTM, direct to metal.

Yep, either way works. Epoxy only though I think, not regular 2K or lacquer.

But, there is a guy on autobodystore dot com that ran some tests a few years ago. Filler on bare metal vs over expoxy.

Let it cure then bent the test metal to test adhesion. Bare metal won out.
