Etching paint

What is a good way to etch the old paint on a tractor? It's not flaking, just old, faded and crappy looking. Is there a chemical way, or do I just start sanding? I want the paint to stick well, but I didn't want to do a lot of sanding if I could help it, as my hands and shoulders are shot. Thanks

I have read in different places that when you need to scuff epoxy primer before top coating that you use a certain color nylon scrubbing pad.

Maroon " scotchbrite" pads...sold at most auto parts stores. Use them with a sprayer on hose and goes real fast. use them dry and you will sweat lot more.

I hope you meant " Wet-Sand" the old paint...!

Well, Papa, I know that wet sanding is often used in the final stages of preparing the primer for the finish coat of paint but have never heard of it for roughening the surface in preparation for priming. Is this something new? please explain.

Wet sanding is only needed on 400 grit and finer sandpaper. Household paint dry sanding is fine. All you are trying to do is make scratches in the old paint so the new paint has something to get a bite on.

TSP Tri sodium phosphate. It will help clean and also remove the gloss from old paint to give the new paint "bite". Then spray entire tractor with a liquid sand paper such as XIM Flash Bond. I have been doing this for over 30 years, and the new paint adheres great and does not flake off. Body shops use a liquid sandpaper for hard to sand areas such as inside door frames and trunks. For the easy to sand sheet metal, I still sand and then apply Flash Bond.

Thanks John, that's more along the lines I was looking for, it'd take me a year to sand it...
