paint problems

So I sand blasted, primed and sanded a set of rims. I started painting and the paint did nothing but Fish eye, so I wiped them down with MEK several times and the paint still Fish eyed. So I sprayed anther coat of primer and that was fine no fish eye and then sprayed the paint after the primer flashed and there was no problem. I'm just trying to under stand what happened. Both the primer and paint are Urethane.
Any thoughts

Fisheye is usually caused by oil, grease or wax contamination . Eliminate all Armor-All products from the area ,all WD 40 sprays etc. until there is no source of contamination . Fish eye eliminator opens up whole new problems and should be avoided if at all possible and a last resort. I was told in painting school to never rent a paint space that was formerly a detailing shop because silicon will be everywhere ruining your paint.

I know what caused the problem and I think it was from the Air hose. Oil that got past the separator. but after wiping it down with a solvent several times should have fixed the problem and it didn't and why would repainting with primer and the primer didn't fisheye is what raised the question.

couple problems i see, first you used mek as a final wash. you should be using a quality wax and grease remover. second, if you got oil past your oil separator , you contaminated your airlines . what did you use to clean your spray gun between the primer coat and the finish coat? did you wear nitrile gloves when you did the fianl prep wash down or tack rag? oil from your hands can also cause fisheyes.

Had a paint booth at work, one time painter was painting and one of the guys opened a tube of RTV gave it a squeeze and tossed it in, fish eyes everywhere!!

Had it continued to fisheye you could have added a fisheye control solvent to the paint. Usually the problem with fisheye is caused by silicone and adding the control solvent which is silicone to the paint is the solution. You just have to be careful not to overspray some other project and dispose of any sandpaper used after the job is done. If the sandpaper is used on another project the fisheye will be transferred to the other project.

Sometimes solvent pop is mistaken for fisheye. if the primer does not get completely dry, usually due to being put on too heavily, the solvent can push out into the top coat popping little holes.

Solvent pop can look like a 1/16 drill bit drilled a million tiny holes . Fish eye is pretty distinct as looking like a fishes eye.

I have also seen very slow reducer cause the fish eye problem because there is so much retarders in the reducers it would cause it .Also try using 90% rubbing alcohol from Walmart or Walgreen to wipe things down before painting it will help with the grease and static..
