Painting IH 560 gas tractor

I purchased a 560 gas that was painted around 5 years ago. The body is a somewhat orange red tint and the tin work is a nice red but it appears it does not have a hardner in it. I wish to repaint the tractor using 2150 Case Ih and with hardner. I do not know what kind of paint was used previously. There are some chips here and there but not too bad. Could I cover old paint with primer then paint or should I remove all old paint.

The only real problem painting over the existing paint is if the old paint is pealing off. You are just at the mercy of the old paint whether the new paint stays on or not. If the old paint should fail it would take off the new paint. If it's just a chip here and there you can level the spot with bondo and just prime the bondo spots. The rest of it you can scuff sand it with sandpaper. You have to be sure you have everything free of oil and grease. Any parts store should have a wax and grease remover. If you are going to be using an enamel you could use 220 grit sandpaper to scuff the old paint.

The problem with painting with a paint which contains red is it's very prone to fade. It would be a lot more colorfast to use an automotive paint than use an enamel. As much work as it is to paint a tractor I think it's worth it to buy better paint which would last longer.
