Lead-free primer and paint

Hello:

I am trying to paint a JD 2240 and would like to avoid using primer and paint with lead. I found lead-free primer and paint at tractorpartsasap by Tallmans Ag Specialty Coatings. Do you have any comments on this paint?

I read a recent comment posted at yesterdaystractors.com where the writer suggested avoiding using paint from the Farm stores. Do you have other suggestions for lead-free primer and paint?

Thank you,
Paul

I do not think you can even buy lead paint anymore.

I would avoid farm store tractor paint, tends to fade bad, get it from dealer.

The paint used for homes is indeed lead-free. However, most of the paint used for auto vehicles has lead. The least amount is in the white paint and the most is in the red paint.

Unless you are getting paint from another country than the United States you won't find any with lead in it. Anyway I don't think there is any white paint in JD paint. Lead was used as a pigment in white paint.

Lead isn't the devil it is portrayed as. The people working in factories exposed to high levels might get sick from it or those children with bad parents that allow them to chew on the woodwork. For the most part it's made out to be the devil for political reasons.

If you want to do a good job painting the tractor I would recommend using automotive paint.

I hope to get some additional information on the Tallmans Ag Specialty Coatings, that is, did somebody use it and what were the results, or an alternative that is lead-free. As far as I searched, this is the only brand that mentions that is lead-free (obviously, I am interested in automotive paint, not paint for residential use which is lead-free since late seventies). I would hope there other automotive paint brands that are lead-free and I would like to find out information about them from this forum.

AS long as you are not sanding it or eating it, what is the problem with lead, except that we do not mine it anymore,we buy it from China.

Do wear protective breathing equipment when sanding any old tractor. You never know what paint was used on it before you got it.
Eastwood has some good paints and primers that are low VOC.

I believe the hazard is the residue and the dust. Small children playing around older homes with lead paint, are always sticking things in their mouths, and getting the lead dust on their fingers. The stuff goes right into their little mouths, then they swallow it. It stays inside the body. They are also really susceptible to the lead poisoning. Brain damage. Bad stuff.

Lead was taken from automotive paint near the same time it was removed from gasoline. Which was over twenty years ago. The first 6 years of my autobidy painting career was fast transitions from moving away from both lacquers and lead, then quickly into urethanes.

I wish you were right. The link below says PPG will phase out lead from all paints by 2020:

http://www.post-gazette.com/business/pittsburgh-company-news/2016/04/21/PPG-income-rises-while-sales-remain-flat-pittsburgh/stories/201604210165

Just google "PPG lead paint" and you will find other reports on the issue.

Interesting. I'll have to read on that. DuPont took it out years ago. I wonder if it's a specialty paint. The only way to get lacquer now is through a specialty paint supplier. there was one tint that kept it a few years.

Walked next door to out paint supplier. I thought everyone had to phase it out years ago. Ppg still uses it in red tints. DuPont has one pearl tint now that has lead due to the green color it produces. But still way less than 25 years ago.
