Etching primer

After I sandblast and get back to bare metal, should I be using etching primer, all cast iron, or just sheet metal, then can I paint directly over the etching primer, or do I need to sand 220-400 before paint, like on engine parts, valve cover, intake oil bath, etc, btw this is a 1953 DC case, thanks Dusty

I found that for things like valve covers etc the only thing that works good is etching primer. Scuff it with scotch pads.

great idea, green scotch pads, then clean up with air,? Water? And paint over, thanks for the tip. Dusty

you have to get oil completely off, I clean in parts washer then keep wiping with lacquer thinner until rags come out clean.

Etching primer is a duplicate of sand blasting, or sanding. Most of the etching primer used by body shops is probably on new sheet metal when they don't want to sand. Sand or sand blast then use epoxy. Etch usually also needs epoxy.

the point of etching primer is adherence and preventing corrosion. But not removal of corrosion. Sanding is required prior, at least with the DuPont,PPG products I've used for years. Though DuPont sold out. Also painting over etching primer normally isn't recommended that I'm familiar with. Topcoat over with a primer filler or a sealer and then paint. Some of the newer sealers claim to allow application over factory ecoat without sanding. But I never had the heart to trust it. If bare metal isn't sanded the products I've used in auto body repairs will peel off.
