What kind of paint?

I just painted a tractor with J.D paint. It flowed very nice and was easy to get a nice finish. The problem I had was getting it to dry. I painted some parts without hardner because it said nothing about using it. The parts took months to dry. Then I painted the rest with hardner that I had on hand. It still took sometime to dry but better. My hardner was old and I think that was my problem. Lesson learned use fresh hardner. Live and learn. Steve

It depends entirely on how much prep you are going to do. It is a waste of money to put good quality automotive paint over a five hour prep, and a major waste of time to put cheap equipment paint over a fifty hour prep. For rust prevention you want phosphoric acid wash and epoxy primer.

Ill agree with you on that. I help my brother in a wood finishing business and its the same way. I just don't know about tractor painting. How do you remove the paint from the rear end and engine? I plan to blast the sheet metal. Thanks for the help.

I painted dad's cat excavator this summer using Sherwin Williams urethane primer and Sherwin Williams industrial paint. Was very happy with it. Prep work is everything like others have said. Dad being retired had a lot of time to do the prep work which he did a real good job at. Because of that the paint turned out nice. As far as prep for rear end and engine pressure wash and use something to cut grease and oil. Either a strong degreaser or I use oven cleaner quite a bit on different projects. Then a lot of wire wheeling and scraping and sanding. I would remove as much from tractor as you can before you get started. Makes things much easier.

I use John Deere and IH paint, but I use acrylic enamel reducer and hardner. It dries quick and shiney.
