How well does oven cleaner work in prepping a tractor chasis for paint?

Mostly getting grease off, you have a lot more sanding or using wire wheels to get the rust, etc off. It is a minor use for me.

So do you wire wheel the entire chasis (as much as possible)?

I had a filled place on my tractor that the paint was in really good shape. When I used oven cleaner on it, it removed the filler. Come to find out the filler was old dirt and grease that was painted over so I would say oven cleaner is only second to sand blasting.

Dollar store oven cleaner is nearly always recommended.

Like the others have said...dollar store oven cleaner, and then I use a good quality hot water pressure washer. The oven cleaner will loosen everything up, and the hot water under pressure will do the rest. I used an electric/diesel washer on one tractor, and then a gas/diesel washer on another. The gas/diesel was much more powerful and would even take off paint.

Chassis is completely wire wheeled. All parts are removed, some are wire wheeled, some are sandblasted.

Oven cleaner is a strong caustic, it will dissolve greases very well.
