Van sickle vs Majic vs Valspar

Not gonna buy expensive paint for my tractors.

They're all the same color now, rust :)...except in the winter, then it's mud....and I've got the itch to make them look better.

Degrease, scuff and go.

Pretty much know everybody's opinion on Majic, what would your choice be between Van sickle or valspar? Price is similar.

Haven't decided whether to use hardener, with the expense of a forced air system.

Got a red Massey, and 4 blue Fords.

Thanks

Fred

You get what you pay for, I don't use those. I have read that they are ok if you keep them inside all the time.

I don't think it will matter.

I bought a 9n that didn't have a speck of paint on the hood. I knew it would fade. I went sanded the hood and sprayed painted the hood with three cans of Van Sickle Ford grey.

It was faded in a year but still looks better than before I painted it.

Painted my Farmall H with Van Sickle red, an it turned a nice white film just sitting inside the barn, out of the sun. Color was sorta close to IH red, but not quite. VAN Sickle? Not for me. My opinion, if you want the correct color, get the paint at the dealer's. Other paints are sorta close, but not quite right. As far as cost, a spray can of Case-IHC paint is about $12, and cheap-o paint is what, $6? Difference in a 6-pack of paint spray paint cans works out to be 6 x $6 = $36. That ain't much.

The red for the Massey is what I'm most concerned about, since red's are notorious for fading.

Did you use a hardener, or spray cans?

Maybe I need to stop at oreillys and napa and actually price out paint.

But if it's 2-300 a gallon, not gonna do it.

This is IH dealer paint. Was about 50 bucks a gallon 4 or 5 years ago, paints good and looks good.

Stay away from NAPA paint. Even with hardner it will be faded in a year or two.

Dad had a 1962 Ford pickup. We sanded and sanded on it. primed it with Napa primer and painted it with Napa blue paint with NAPA brand hardner added. NAPA claimed their blue paint was a factory match to the original Ford metallic blue paint. The NAPA paint was not the same shade of blue and was not metallic. Dads pickup also got a white film all over it within a year.

The IH paint has a modified alkyd paint, meaning less fading. Alkyd was designed in the 30's, the modified was done in I think the 90's? It is less than $100/gal, I have never used it and have not checked the price in several years. The other Ford, New Holland, JD probably sell the same type of paint. See if you can find that out. While not a competitor with PPG, DuPont, etc it is a lot better than the farm stores, which most of those being junk.

gab, that looks fantastic, lots nicer than when new. Did you paint it yourself or hire it done ?
I have had very good luck with I H paint for several yrs now. clint

I snapped this a few days ago because of this thread.

This belongs to my friend. It was restored for him about fifteen years ago by the FFA at the local high school.

A painter I know did the sheet metal for 100 bucks. I had it straightened as good as I could, striped, blasted here and there and primed and block sanded several times.

Some of the Van sickle paint I used on my MM (dyna brown) faded some but it sits out all of the time. The Majic brand I would stay away from. I used that on the hood and fenders and it chalked up bad. Thinking about trying to clean it off.

These 101 Masseys have Majic paint....They never see the sun unless I show them so have faded very little....

I use them more than I care to tell,. but honestly it beats letting everthing rust away , and the brite finish is good for the eyes and heart .. nearly everything I have needed luv bad when I got it ,usually spray them down with oil /diesel , and let that cook in in hot sun , then pressure wash and litely sand and paint it rite,,. if I don't have time to sand and paint rite the rattle can fix will hold the metal til I have time to paint rite,. vansikle fades, ... majic with hardner is decent,it went on slik and smooth . but . my 800 case has a faint olive cast on the desert sunset,. besides my nephews 830 it is noticeable, but very acceptable... he used a acrylic desert sunset, the color stayed good , but its a orange peel finish

Rather than paint or even auto polish to protect a tractor or something with old deteriorated paint, I will brush a little rust converter onto the areas where rust is showing in order to stop the advance until I can get to it.

I have painted several tractors and I am a fan of valspar but I just painted my 4010 with the van sickle and I like the way it turned out but eaven with the Hardner it is taking longer to cure out.

I had to put an alternator on a neighbors JD, and picked up a rattle can of Majic JD green for the bracket and a quick dusting on a couple other places. It went on ok, glossed nicely, but took forever to become tack free, and started looking mediocre within a month. A month later, I got to do some more work on it. Shot the hood with some Valspar I had in a gallon can I'd picked up several years ago to dress some JD plows for cheap. Consistency in the can wasn't too impressive after it's long sit, but it went on ok, and a year later, it still looks darn good, especially considering the tractor averages maybe 2 days a year under cover.

Have to admit that I've been impressed with what I've used of the IH/CNH IronGard paint. Price is reasonable (~63/gal IIRC), it goes on well, and seems to hold gloss nicely. Time will tell how quickly it fades - all paints do; some just a whole lot faster than others. I consider fade far less a problem than film failure (like chalking or pealing).

For a JD tractor, the original JD paint can be found online for $40.
Is that better than the other brands?
