painting 2640

I would like to paint my John Deere 2640. I am not looking to make it look like a restoration tractor because it is a working tractor. I just want it to look better. The hood and fenders have a lot of surface rust. what is the best way to go about putting some new paint on it. Thanks

No such thing as surface rust. Take it down to bare metal, I like to use a #80 flap wheel. Kill the rust that is hiding down in the pits with a phosphoric acid rust killer, I like SEM, like the autobody shops use, paint with epoxie primer. Top coat with good paint if you are spending a lot of time on prep. If you are spending just a few ours, buy cheap paint.

Showcrop has excellent advice, etop STOP that rust. What I did on my Farmall was work on one or two pieces at a time, removed them, de-rusted them, sandblasted some, wire brushed others, primed with red spray primer and used the dealers CASE-IH authentic red spray paint cans. But I just did one piece at a time, as I could progress along. That process kept me enthused, and motivated. Got her done. Just a work tractor / chore tractor, but I do win awards in the Christmas parade.

Just get some 220 and a pack of 120 and use a orbital sanders and sand off all the rust
to bare metal and get a couple cans of sandals primer and spray over the sanded places a
coat at a time until covered and then get some fine wet and dry sandpaper and water sand
the primer.until smooth. Go to tractor supply and they have quart cans of John Deere
paint and get the thinner too and if you got a compressor set your air pressure on 45 psi
and lightly spray a coat of paint at a time. Let each coat flash for about 10 - 15
minutes before putting on another coat. Just make sure the paint is acrylic enamel so you
won't have to buff the paint out after it days. Use a good spray gun. You can also buy
the paint in spray cans at tractor supply. It is already premised. If you use paint and
thinner miss x it 65-35. Stir paint until it runs off paint stick like water.

You can buy the primer that fills in the divets. He can get the paint that matches his John Deere at tractor <>supply in quart cans or spray cans. If he uses the Velcro <>sandpaper that fits a 5 inch sanders in 220 and 120 grit <>it will take all the rust off. If he follows our directions it will be a breeze to fix.

Wanted to do the same thing on my 1520 used the tsc paint it was horrible now its not even the right shade 1 yr later.
