Primer for Aluminum

A few months ago I painted an aluminum clutch master cylinder with aerosol paint, I believe that it was lacquer, I can check if need be. Now it has stuff growing out through the paint. I assume that I need to prime it. What should I use? I cleaned the cylinder before painting with an alkaline/ solvent cleaner and rinsed well with water, then wiped down with final prep.

Did you wipe cylinder after installing it with a rag that might of had some brake fluid on it. Brake fluid will destroy paint.

No, it hasn't been installed yet, just sitting on the shelf.

(quoted from post at 11:23:26 06/29/16) SEM metal etching primer. Comes in spray cans.

I am pretty sure that I have some metal etching primer on hand. does it need to be SEM? Or would regular primer work if I etch it first with SEM Rust Mort?

Was an aircraft structural mechanic for years. you have to etch aluminium with alodine first. then use an epoxy primer. what you have is corrosion under
the paint.

No it does not have to be SEM. But like the other guy said you may have some contamination in the aluminum that is in the pores of the metal. That type of part is tricky.

I'm not sure if it comes in a rattle can or not but I like Variprime primer for aluminum. I've never had a failure with that.

What can I spray on aluminium to keep it looking bright and not turn yellow? This part is on the engine so it will be getting water temp.hot.
