Body shop...what to do?

I'm restoring a Farmall H and having a body shop do up the sheet metal for me. I have painted the tractor frame and cast iron pieces with Case-IH iron guard paint.

The body shop told me they COULD use that paint but using a automotive grade base coat-clear coat would look much better and is what they are used to using.

I was wondering if it would look wierd having the sheetmetal much shinier? Or is that just how it's done?

I would hope that the sheet metal would be much shinier than the cast just because of what they are. If sheet metal doesn't look any better than cast then I'd be bummed. The color shade match would be my concern here. They should have ability to match yours as long as you make it known that you expect it. They match used weathered cars everyday so anything less is unacceptable.

I'm mostly worried that the sheet metal with automotive grade paint and clear coat will look like it doesn't belong. Maybe I'm just over thinking this. I have some time to figure out what i want as the tins are at the blaster this week.

As far as they are concerned you are asking them to paint with latex wall paint. They are looking at the iron guard paint as a very sub-standard coating. If it were me I would let them use what ever paint they are accustom to working with. It will look better and last much longer.

It will not look out of place. I have done base/clear on sheet metal and single stage on the cast. It looks fine. It will also look fine with Case IH 2150 on the cast.

A commercial blaster can bend the sheet metal, best to remove it your self. An H won't work you to death. I've done 4 tractors that way, I warped the 5th one (460 hood) slightly with my cheap sand blaster.

It is time and sun that will show the biggest differance . My life long friend with
a body shop does tractors . He prefers auto paint but I prefer the enamels . When it
comes to red they all fad over time . Have them get you a sample area first then you
can see and feel . A hardened clear coat is not a bad thing it helps protect finish
also .

If you use that Ironguard you will proabably like the way they look together for 2-3 years, until the iron guard gets faded and dull.

The base coat / clear coat paint is what every body shop plus auto factors use now. You might still get the acrylic enamel paint too. The base and clear coat paint is very expensive but great paint. It depends on if you are restoring the tractor. If so I would let them paint the whole thing.

Stephen hit the nail right on the head. These body shops have gone to the base /clear coat paint. The hardner I put in the paint I use will keep it protected for a long time. I won't put low grade paint in my spray guns unless I have a old one. These spray guns are high now if you buy the best ones.
