Flaking paint

All, having a little problem with some paint on a two year old restoration. Quite a bit of the paint on the cast (engine, trans.) is flaking off and the primer is coming off with it. The tractor was steamed cleaned and completely degreased. It was clean. we used PPG Omni paint and a PPG primer on this. On some later restorations we used an epoxy primer, havent had a problem. I have heard of using a primer sealer. has anyone used this? Or does anyone have suggestions on something I missed? tips or tricks? I thought using good paint products would be the way to go. I have had better luck with Tractor supply rattle cans. lol. The tin work loos really nice. Thanks for the help. Adam

You didn't get it clean. The most frequent recommendation here is dollar store oven cleaner. Spray it on, let it set, brush, pressure wash, repeat, at least three times.

You might have thought you got it clean but it doesn't take but a microscopic trace of oil to cause paint not to adhere. Cast is also very porous and very difficult to get the oil out if the oil had gotten to through the old paint. Sometimes it takes a steamer to lift the oil out.

From where you are I would go over the spots with some heated oven cleaner several times and rinse with a power washer. Then sand around the edges and prime it and paint again with the same Omni paint.

(quoted from post at 07:39:56 04/30/16) You are probably right. We used ez off oven cleaner. But maybe missed some.

If you use EZ-Off aerosol you would need about a dozen cans to do a proper job.

I have had paint lift off of painted engine parts using epoxy primer. My supply guy ,who is a retired auto body shop owner , told me to use etching primer and then the paint stuck.
