Sanding after primer coat?

Hey guys,

I've just completed priming my entire tractor with Van Sickle enamel metal primer and it went on great/looks great. Before I apply the enamel top coat, do I need to scuff or sand the primer coat to promote adhesion or is it good to go without sanding?

Thanks,

Jeff

Thanks for the replies guys. I called Van Sickle and spoke with one of their techs and he said I should be good to shoot right over the primer as long as it hasn't been a couple weeks since the primer was applied. Since it was Saturday when I shot the chassis and I plan to top coat it tomorrow, I'm within the window.

On the other hand, it certainly won't hurt to scuff it up for insurance so I may do the sheet metal that way since it's the most visible surface area and it's been in primer for a little longer than the chassis.

i would de-nib it at the very least with a red scotchbrite pad. then tack rag to remove any dust or dirt. if you got any fingerprints on it, give it a quick wipe down with a wax and grease remover like prep sol or final wash.

You may not have to, but I think you get a better finish when you hit the primer with a little sandpaper like Glennster says

Agreed guys. Will do, thanks!

Van Sickle red that I used developed a nice white film over the months, just sitting in the barn, in the shade. Not for me, ever again.

One advantage of a good Scotchpad scuffing is taking down any insects or little nubs that got in your primer coat. Then they don't show through your finish coat.

The primer is the foundation of the finish. If you don't smooth and level it out with sandpaper you can't expect the finish to be smooth and level.
