Not trying to be a smart ars here but think about it this way. Would you use body filler hardener in drywall compound just because it said hardener and you were told it would work? Hardener is actually called catalyst. Catalyst is something that when added to another product that is designed to be inert until combined with said catalyst, will create a chemical reaction and convert into a completely different product. They both must be developed with the intention of being joined with the other as instructed. No instructions should give you a clue to your answer. If there were a product you could add to their paint to make it better , why wouldn't they tell you and promote it since it would make their product even better? You can add "hardener" to any paint. Will it do any good? Well do you have any way of knowing if that paint has the correct chemical in it to react/combine with the catalyst to create the chemical reaction required to set up hard? Why is it that you spray urethane without the required catalyst and it will never cure? Isn't it just an option ? I've done body/paint professionally for 35 yrs and I still don't play chemist. If they don't mention a catalyst then that would be my answer.

The Iron Guard paint is a modified alkyd enamel. It would make it a harder finish if you used hardener in it but the hardener isn't necessary. An 8 oz. can would do a gallon of paint. You will need some very good ventilation or even better a air supplied respirator to use the hardener. It's a isocyanate which could put a major hurt on you even wearing a cartridge respirator.

get a hardner compatible with your paint and heed the warnings mentioned about respirators or safe breathing.

some people are sensitive.. some aren't.

I just painted my Super A with the caseIH Irongard paint (2150 red.) Used PPG Omni MR186 reducer and MH 167 hardener. Mixed it 4:1:1. I'm very happy with the finish so far.

I have a good idea. Why don't you call the company who made the paint and get their answer and then post back on here so we will all learn something. I am curious and never too old to learn. Looking forwardto your post.

Majic claims their hardener increases the hardness of an alkyd enamel by 30%, the gloss by 10% and decreases the drying time by 40%.

"I still don't play chemist. If they don't mention a catalyst then that would be my answer. "

My thoughts exactly. I also lean toward saying it's only sales hype if paint is desighned to dry without hardener and mfgr say's their hardener improve's it. One jocky near me add's gasoline for shine, another swears laquer thinner hardens alkyd paint. I see first hand that gas fades right a way and laquer thinner peels and chips bad. Me,I toss the last few drops of morning coffee over my shoulder on the way to the shop and it improve's gas milage on both my trucks.

ANY isocyanate hardner will harden ANY paint .

Not trying to be a chemist either , but been painting 31 years .

Imron hardner will work in rustolem alkd enamel ... just FYI
