alkyd paints

Alkyd paint is everywhere not overburdened by environmentalists. It's oil based paint like that used for house paint. There are different grades of it. A real paint store should have an industrial maintenance enamel which is a little better and you can add a hardener to it which it a little harder yet. Tractor Supply also sells alkyd paint. The durability is a real problem though. You could get 10 years out of a lot of different colors but some colors especially red are really bad to fade. With a color containing red you can almost see it fade daily. It otherwise protects the metal pretty good but it's softer than automotive paint so is easier to be gouged down to bare metal which starts to rust. I painted a Kubota tractor with Valspar tractor paint in 2009 not wanting to spend much on it and many parts of it are peach colored now. A better paint I've been wanting to try is Sher-Kem enamel from Sherwin Williams. From what I can find out about it I believe it is a cheaper single stage urethane. It was developed to paint industrial equipment harshly used such as dumpsters and farm implements.

Like Steve said, it's not just the type paint but the market at which the product was aimed by manufacturer. There are cheap urethanes that will also change color. It is the grade of pigments and binders that regulate color fastness and durability. We've all seen the "pink" fire hydrants around certain towns. They got what they paid for as their bean counters took low bid without spec. research. Alkyd, just by it's name now-a-days throws it into an "economy" market which tells the chemists they have to meet a certain bargain price as apposed to quality. If it has to sell cheap then it will be made cheap. It does have it's place in the paint it today / sell it tomorrow market tho.
