painting old car

I have a '97 Buick with a large peeled area on the deck lid but no rust or dents. I don't want to spend a lot on painting but what would you guys recommend in the way of paint and primer and prep just to make it look decent and prevent rusting. I want to use rattle cans if possible but will do the entire lid. Thanks.

The peeling paint is just what shows. If it's peeling the rest of it is on the verge of peeling also. Is the peeling colored paint or is it the clear coat? You might be able to sand the clear coat off and just topcoat it again. It would still need the base coat but you might be able to skip the primer. Give up the idea of using rattle can paint. That only works on very small parts. It's pretty poor quality paint that won't last for you anyway.

If you want the paint to stay on the car, you need to remove all the paint down to bare metal and then metal prep, primer, finish coating. When they first started peeling 20 years ago, peeps tried quick and dirty and that was good enough to sell it to someone else, but not to keep.

I have known the car for several years and only one area of the deck lid has peeled down to the metal. There is no sign of peeling anywhere else. The affected area is about 8" by width of panel. I plan to take off all peeling paint, treat the metal, prime and paint. Does that sound like a plan? What should I treat the metal with and how is the best way to remove the paint? Thanks a lot.

You just never know. You might redo one spot and recoat the rest of it and a month down the road have another spot peal. I know it's a lot more money and work but the only sure thing would be a complete refinish.

Wherever you take the paint down to bare metal I would epoxy prime. The best way to take the paint down to bare metal would be a disc sander. Before you do any sanding though be sure to clean the paint with a wax and grease remover. If there is any wax on the car sanding will just spread it around and into the metal.
