here we go again - which red is the right red???

I know this question gets old but...

I was ready to order a gallon of case/ih 2150 for my 1959 560...

... then was reminded that I can only get it through a dealer, and I don't have one anywhere near me.

So - I got to trying to figure out what PPG paint code is... which led me to a seemingly well thought out site that lists farmalls colors and equivelant paint colors...

According to that page:

older tractors used the #50 paint - check, knew that
"newer" tractors used the #2150 paint - check, knew that
but in between - from 1956 to 1961 they used #201 paint, which I've never heard of. They note that it's "apparently" the same as #50

so - is that accurate?

Should I be using #50 on a 59 560?

In other places I read that all 560's should use 2150... but you know how this goes, everybody's got an opinion.

Does anybody KNOW what is proper for this tractor?

This is a working tractor, and I don't NEED to be "proper" - and I know I can paint it any color I'd like - but I'm buying paint either way, so I might as well buy the right one.

Final question - any opinions on the case/ih paint vs. PPG omni paint? I can't spend a lot on this tractor, but I want a decent finish. I might be able to have a case/ih dealer ship it if need be.

Thanks

I used PPG when I did my Cub. I used a harvester red that was true red. If you put mine next to a tractor painted with 2150 you will think the 2150 is a bit more to an orange. I do not show the tractor and like the true red. It applied easily and made a good durable finish. For what it is worth...only tractor I ever painted.

Reds can vary so much just due to age that it can be difficult to get what you really want. A different approach is to take a panel that has original color on the inside and get it digitally analyzed. Then you know that you get what you really want.

By golly I'll just step right in and further complicate things. My Case-IH dealer has several 'red' Case IH paints. I was recomended by the old timer at the service counter to not use the 2150. He didn't like it, for some reason. He liked the Case-IH CNH red No. B17566N Iron-Gard Gloss-Red. I sprayed on a few coats, using spray cans, wet-sanded it, on my 1950 Farmall "H", and I like it a lot. Looks just like the reds on the new CNH tractors on the lot. No idea if it looked like that in 1950. I also think I remember there may be a third IH red, on their shelves, that's supposed to match something else IH. Good luck. My actual belief is there's not a lot of difference, anad you'll like it alot. I will never use Van Sickle paints, they start off the wrong red, then turn milky white.

I've decided I'm going with the IH50 equivalent - ppg 70019

The IH paint decision to switch from the 201 to 2150 says the new 2150 is a brighter red.

I've always preferred the deeper red of the 50, so this justifies me using it :)

So - decision made.

Now just have to decide on a paint. I've used the PPG shopline stuff in the past, and I'm leaning that way out of habit - unless anybody here has a better suggestion, that's probably what I'll do.

Thanks

We do have a john deere dealer nearby - but any time I go there for anything ag related, the parts desk goes silent and all I hear are eyes blinking.

Asking for paint might confuse them as it's not part of a lawn mower.

2150 was not used until 1960 or 1961, I forget which. 50, 2150 from PPG, DuPont, etc can still be sold, 201 is not available. I use PPG 71310 which is the equivalent of 2150. As far as the "correct" color, they have all changed due to the EPA making them change, among other reasons. As to it being sold by CaseIH, the 71310 is identical to the color of IH 2150, as to my eyes. Urethane is better and longer lasting than anything sold by tractor dealers. Stay away from farm stores.

I'm being a little unfair to them, they're good for the lawn mower stuff, there just isn't a lot of farming going on around here.

There were several different shades of red over the years. #50 is the "correct" one for the letter series. Guy Fay talked about this in his Farmall Letter Series Originality Guide, it's no longer in print but basically what he said was if you could go back in time and see a tractor painted in the original #50 and another in 2150, you wouldn't notice much difference. I recently took a painting/body work class at the local community college and painted one of my tractors. I used 2150 from the caseIH dealer, and put PPG hardener and reducer in it. It looks really good. In the past I have seen 2150 look sort of "orange-y" but I think if you put down multiple coats the red gets deeper. I have another tractor that was painted with Nason paint, the code that matches 2150, 96766 if I recall correctly. I haven't had chance to park them side by side to see if I can see a difference.

For a field tractor what is wrong with farm store paint? I don't know but seems a lot of tractors and implements are painted with paint from TSC, etc.
