restoring a JD Wagon

A friend called tonight wanting to know about a stain to put on a JD Barge wagon. What are your suggestions? If paint is fairly decent, I like to use a 50/50 mixture of boiled Linseed Oil and Turpentine. It preserves the wood and really brings out the painting detail. the man that called was sure they used to use a stain. Please help. Thanks

The mixture of linseed oil and turpentine wouldn't offer very much long term protection. I would need frequent re-treatment. A more waterproof oil you could use would be tung oil. If you are intending to use a stain to give the wood color you might use a fence or deck stain. A fence or deck stain is a exterior stain more suited for that application. You could also add tung oil to the fence stain however that would dilute the color. Before trying that be sure to test the color on some scrap wood. When using tung oil though be careful of the product. Some are a tung oil finish which is a mixture of other components diluting it. It's better to use 100% tung oil.
