I am looking to buy a couple new rims,16X38 for a IH 826.My question is should I repaint the factory painted rims.My feeling is the factory applied silver paint is not that duarble.I am not sure if I should paint over the factory paint or should I remove it and start over, with primer and paint.I have a couple rims on my 560 that I sand blasted and then had them powder coat painted. They have held up well, but they did need to be sand blasted to clean them up.I would just as soon not blast new ones if I can help it.
Thanks for any information.

My Sears lawn trailer was never sheltered and the tubeless tires were inclined to leak and when I removed the tires, the rims had pin holes from rust I had them sand blasted and I used primer and acrylic enamel. I also used inner tubes and have no leakage so far. Hal

I would wipe them with mineral spirits or something similar just to remove any oil or whatever, and then paint.

I think that it is a good idea to put another coat or two on. It is so much easier than after you get a lot of rust.

I don't trust previous paint when I don't know what it is. I would remove all of it. At least sand it good before priming--Preferably epoxy.

I always paint over the factory paint because that factory stuff has little to no uv protectors in it and it fades very fast. My preferred method is to scuff the rims lightly with a scotchbright pad and wipe clean with a wax and grease remover. I then shoot a light coat of epoxy primer and paint/clear. Sometimes you will come across a nick in the rim or chip around the edge and the epoxy will help better than just paint alone.

Repaint them. I bought a set of 8n rims. Put them on the tractor using the old tubes that still had a little of the calcium chloride in them. Just the little but that spilled on the paint during assembly rusted. I ended up pulling them apart and having them sand blasted to clean them up.

Thanks for all your good advice.I like the idea of scuffing the original paint and applying epoxy primer-paint and clear coat.

I'm hearing some pretty good comments on the Astro-evo 4014 paint gun W/ the 1.4 tip. Can I paint epoxy primer / paint / clear coat with this gun and the 1.4 tip? Never used a gravity type gun.
