Hvlp paint gun

Hello tractor nation I am looking to get a hvlp paint gun but I don't know the first thing about them any pointers on what a good quality gun would be for a reasonable price? I'm looking to paint my 51' chevy with it.

Thanks,
Matt

If you just scroll down through this forum you will see lots of posts where knowledgeable guys say to get it at Harbor Freight.

I have one I bought from lowes for $99.00 complete with regulator. Used once did not like it. $50.00 plus shipping. Ed 513 889 7777

What kind of paint will you be spraying? If you are going to use an oil based enamel any cheap sprayer would work. If you will be spraying some automotive paints like lacquers or acrylic enamels then it is worthwhile getting a good quality gun. Automotive urethane paints will work more like oil based enamel. I painted this tractor including the stenciling with a twenty dollar harbor freight sprayer.

(quoted from post at 07:36:16 12/20/15) The top spray gun u will see at any body shop is a sata. Next is anest iwata.

If a person hasn't done much quality painting, a $500 gun will make no difference in the quality of their paint job. The gun can or can't make the job. I buy the Harbor Frt $20 guns when they run them on sale for 10-11 bucks a pc. about 10 at a time. I use them a couple time and throw away. The gun is cheaper then thinner to clean it. However, I would never try to paint a truck with one.
30 years ago, if you didn't pay $250 for a spray gun, it wasn't worth a crap. Today you can buy a decent gun for $60-$80. I myself still wouldn't spray a clear coat paint job on a truck with it, but many would. Heavy metallic and clears still require a good gun. Sata is a very good clear gun, but I don't spray enamel on tractors with it.

I have a Sata, but doubt it makes me a better painter than a harbor freight model. The key to good painting is proper preparation and putting on enough paint. I would recommend putting on one coat, waiting 20-30 minutes than putting on a final coat. The real trick is to go SLOW when moving the gun, look for it glossing up when you apply the paint.

A good knock off of a Iwata LVLP (LPH400LV) is the Astro EVO 4014 (1.4 tip). I've owned both and still have the Iwata. If you can find a good used one for a reasonable price buy it. I WOULD NOT give you a plugged nickle for the H.F. 47016 and any other variants of it ($17). It's just a cheap imitation of an old Sata that's a pain to keep in tune.
