Tips on fiberglass repair.....

.....to the bottom of a boat? Any tips on working upside down? Just bought it used (1996 model) and the front keel roller is missing from the trailer. I was under it today to put a new roller in and saw there's some scratches through the gel-coat into the fiberglass. Anyone got any tips on what works best on the bottom of a boat? Turning it upside down ain't gonna happen but I have room to work on the scratches - just gotta do it upside down.

Scratches are about 1/4" wide and several inches long from sliding over the brackets & support rod/axel for the missing roller.

Thanks for any info!

here is a link to west marine repair kits. sounds like you have some minor scratches, not a major tear, the west system 101 would fit the bill. lightly sand the area, use either lacquer thinner, prep sol, or m.e.k. to de gloss and clean, then apply the product.

ohh, yer by crystal river!! i dove with the manatees there some years back. also up by alachua(sp) springs state park, dove jenny and jug springs, also devils eye and ear caves on the ichnetucky (sp) river too. pretty county there.

Working on it upside down may be a little messy but doable. The important thing is to clean it good and grind any paint and primer off before attempting the repair. Buy a bunch of throw away brushes and use that to brush the resin on with.

I grew up in SC and took my open water checkout dive int t he Crystal River - next summer will b 50 years ago. I'm WAY too young to be saying anything like that!!!!
Back in the day we dove Devils Eye, Devils Ear and a few more. I was in Genie Spring before they put the grating at the squeeze to keep people out.
Had both hips replaced twice - never got the bends but the Drs at Duke said I'd come close enough to develop avascular nercrosis (Cassion disease). I still scallop dive but can't see putting the $$$ in starting diving again.

Got tired of snow in WV so we settled near Ocala a few years back. You still i the area?
