Removing Paint and Rust

What is the best paint stripper to remove paint and rust? I am working in a pole building with no heat or exhaust system. I do not want to sandblast. I would prefer not sanding the entire tractor by hand.

I strip running gears and use Citristrip Stripping Gel. It has a pleasant orange smell can be used indoors. It has been very effective for me, easy to apply and it doesn't drip - it's a gel, and I use it inside my garage. However, the directions say to use it in temperatures between 65 and 85 degrees. Sounds like it might get colder than 65 degrees inside your unheated pole building. No exhaust in your building, no problem. Easy to find at Home Depot, Walmart, Amazon, and many other places.

Aggressive flap wheel in your grinder. It will come off fast so you will get dust, but nowhere near as bad as sand blasting.

Depending on sizes and timing and etc. of what you have, but I have been very surprised how well vinegar works, it removes ALL the rust and leaves some as converted to the black rust. I have to leave stuff soaking for a few days, but it really works.

Here is something I posted a few months ago about cleaning up and painting my tractor

This is after all mechanical work was done and about 9 hours of work done with it.

cleaning started

I primed it in sections, I was having problems with flash rust after cleaning. If you prime with epoxy and do not get final color coat on within the "window" (usually 3 days) you have to rescuff it and apply another coat of epoxy and then the final color coats

This is where I am at now. I just got the tires on it before Thanksgiving and will do some work on sheetmetal this winter and hope to finish it in the spring.

Hope this helps,

Under the circumstances you might consider having someone sandblast the tractor. Chemically stripping isn't a winter sport and it would remove only the paint. The rust would still need to be sanded. Removers don't do well below 70 degrees and the ones that work are flammable. Closed up in a building with the heat on you risk a big boom. If you wanted to wait until warm weather you could use Kleen Strip Aircraft Remover and a power washer.

Hi I just came across your post. I'm doing the same.
Q: what Red did you use on your tractor.
Mine is a 1948 8n.

8N, jubilee, NAA, and hundreds all use "vermilion"

I used PPG Omni paint MTK Acrylic Urethane with hardener over MP series Epoxy Primer
PPG 70075 Vermillion Red
PPG 32675 Ford Grey
For the rear rims I used
PPG 8568 Argent silver

You can impress me with your work if you paint your starter, genny, and all fasteners except those that hold the wheels, sheet metal, and electrical components red.

The best paint stripper I've found is Klean Strip Aircraft Paint Remover. It doesn't smell good, it isn't environmentally friendly, but it really works.
