I am restoring a 4 row John Deere 71 flex planter. I have a couple questions.

I am wondering what you guys would recommend for paint?

How would you guys go about removing the existing paint and rust? Would you guys wire brush it all then prime and then paint or should I use a solvent to make sure all the rust and existing paint is off and then prime and paint.

What solvent would you use?

Thanks for the help!

A 71 really isn't old. In fact they are still produced.Only not by Deere.Yetter MFG now makes em. M.E.K. will remove decals. wire brush and/or sand rust then paint with a 'rust converter.A commertial paint remover may be needed. Sand blasting is another option.Use Deere paint,or buy the really high dollar stuff that needs hardener from an auto paint store.Next question: is this for "show",or just to clean up to use and look nice? A 70 would be a better choice to "restore".You will get better 'mileage' at a show with someting older. The first of the #70 were built in '56,till about "66 ,maybe later. In fact,I still use a #70 to plant up to 100 acres corn annually(this year it was only 60).'Pull' it with a SuperM.Beet, onion, vegatable guys like em.Still pay good/decent money for em.

I use it every spring plants it still plants 20 - 30 acres. It just I need a winter project and I have been talking about doing it the past couple years so now I am doing it. What spray gun would you recommend with not spending a lot of money? What primer do you recommend?
Thanks

Cant advise here.I am NOT a painter.LOL I wouldn't paint/'restore' it at all.If it were me,I'd just clean it up and maybe some touching up with an aerosol.

Another really good tool against rust and old paint is the flap wheel. They come in an assortment of grits and sizes. Get the largest that will fit in your hand held grinder. Be prepared for a big could of dust!
