So Im replacing the chimney cap on my fireplace.. had one made with hole cut out and collar placed.. I would like to "trim" paint the sides that stick down over siding to match house trim.. what can I do to prep galv. for primer and paint..
thank you!!

Seems like Sherwin-Williams recommended some sort of calcium-sulfate or some sort of acid, I forget, to remove the galvanizing so we could paint. NOt sure any more, but I do remember that by removing the galvanizing, we removed the corrosion-proofing also.

Lightly sandblast, prime with zinc rich primer. Finish with compatible topcoat.

We did that on a special project once. Paint (DuPont) supplier recommended it.
