long question about paint and primer

I am painting a farmall super a I got red oxide primer and reducer from case ih for i was going to use their paint. the directions said to thin 8 to 1 .idid but it wouldnt come out so i used more reducer but it didnt go very far. is it me ,the gun or their primer? what else can i do or use?

What size tip is in your spray gun? You prolly need a 1.4 or 1.2 tip. That stuff is pretty thick.

Are you sure the gun was in good working order? A lot of times primers won't spray right because the gun needs a more than thorough cleaning.

I shoot clears with a 1.2, base and single stage w/1.4. One part primers seem to like a 1.8. 2K primers I can get by with a 1.4.

But, the OP didn't state what kind of gun he's using. Gravity feed - siphon feed or???? Air pressure can factor in if siphon.

Thanks for catching that ken, sb 1.4 to1.8, not 1.2. Musta had a senior moment.
